“In the course of an Athlete’s lifetime, we should hope and pray that not only will we be remembered for our athletic achievements but more importantly for how we used our God given talents to give something good back to humanity.”

AFA Founder Goes Home To Aid Hurricane Ravaged
South Louisiana- Gulf Coast

AFA Founder, Billy McGehee, spent the last two weeks working in South Louisiana helping victims from Hurricane Katrina. It is a place he knows well. It is the place where he grew up. McGehee was born and raised in Baton Rouge, attended high school in New Orleans and college at LSU.

“I was fifteen years old when Hurricane Camille hit the Gulf Coast in 1969. I was fortunate to be able to help get aid to those individuals via my father’s company and fortunate now to be able to help. I remember the massive devastation caused by Camille all along the coast but after seeing the destruction caused by Katrina to New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, I am absolutely overwhelmed. I have never seen anything like it. I live in Florida where we were hit by four major hurricanes last year. The damage was extensive but nothing of the magnitude of Katrina. To see the faces of individuals who have lost family members and loved ones is heartbreaking. To see people homeless and misplaced, begging for food and water, dieing in the streets, being bused to cities unknown with no way to contact loved ones or know whether or not they survived is hard to understand or accept.

I started AFA after 9/11 because I believe every American needs to become better prepared for any emergency and able to help as a first responder. After seeing this catastrophe and the way that certain government agencies responded, I now believe more than ever in our purpose and mission. AFA will become a national leader as an emergency educational provider and emergency responder. We know that more man-made and natural disasters will occur as well as day to day tragedies. We all need to be better prepared because as you saw from this tragedy, it very well could be up to you to save one or more people’s lives. I hope that through continued support from athletes and sponsors all across America we will become a major force in helping all Americans become better prepared for any type of emergency.”
